SUFI POEMS: “I am a fountain, You are my water” by Zeynep Hatun

“I am a fountain, You are my water”

I am a fountain, You are my water.
I flow from You to You.

I am an eye, You are my light.
I look from You to You.

You are neither my right nor my left.
You are my foot and my arm as well.

I am a traveler, You are my road.
I go from You to You.

by Zeynep Hatun

Zeynep Hatun was one of the first significant women voices of Ottoman poetry. She apparently wrote a Diwan (a collection of poetry) which has been lost. The limited knowledge we have of her writing and life comes to us through mention in two sources, one written by the poet Latifi, and the other by the poet Asik Celebi. They disagree on the place of her birth, but both agree that she lived in Istanbul.

In Camille Helminski’s modern book, Women of Sufism, we are told that:

“…Zeynep Hatun [was] one of the strong women of Sufism around whom people have gathered for light and guidance in the Ankara region of Turkey for many years…”
